Before coffee, before checking messages, and before deciding what I’m actually doing with the rest of my day, there is one little group waiting for me every morning.
My balcony plants. 😂
They don’t send notifications.
They don’t complain.
But when the leaves start looking slightly dramatic, I know exactly what they’re trying to tell me.
Water, please.
So this morning I grabbed my watering can and stepped outside while the sunlight was still soft.
And somehow, what was supposed to be a five-minute job turned into one of my favorite parts of the day.
My Tiny Garden Above the City
I don’t have a huge garden.
Actually, calling it a “garden” might be slightly generous. 😆
It’s really a collection of pots, flowers, greenery, and little plants squeezed together on the balcony.
But I love it.
With buildings in the distance and streets somewhere below, this tiny green corner feels like its own little world.
I especially like coming outside early, before the day becomes noisy.
There’s something peaceful about watering flowers while the city is slowly waking up around you.
Watering One Plant Somehow Becomes Twenty
My original plan was very reasonable.
Water the flowers.
Go inside.
Make breakfast.
Simple.
Then I noticed one plant needed a few dry leaves removed.
Another pot needed moving because it wasn’t getting enough sunlight.
Then I found a new little bud.
Obviously, I had to inspect that. 🌱😂
Suddenly I’d been outside much longer than expected.
This happens every time.
Plants are sneaky little time thieves.
A Very Practical Gardening Outfit 🤎
I kept today’s outfit simple with a relaxed rust-colored jumpsuit.
It’s comfortable, easy to move around in, and most importantly, I don’t have to panic if a little water or soil lands on it.
Because it will.
Gardening while remaining perfectly clean is apparently a skill I have not unlocked yet. 😅
I also tied my hair back loosely because once I start moving pots around, long hair and enthusiastic plants become surprisingly complicated friends.
Nothing fancy today.
Just comfortable clothes, messy hair, warm sunshine, and a watering can.
Exactly right for the mood.
The Smallest Things Become Exciting
One thing I didn’t expect about keeping plants was how ridiculously excited I would become over tiny changes.
A new leaf?
Exciting.
A flower opening?
Very exciting.
Something I thought was dying suddenly growing again?
I am now emotionally invested. 😂🌸
This morning I found several fresh flowers among the greenery, and I probably spent longer looking at them than necessary.
But that’s part of the fun.
Plants move on their own schedule.
You can’t hurry them.
You simply take care of them, wait, and occasionally get surprised.
I think there’s something nice about having at least one part of life that works that way.
No Phone for Ten Minutes
I also realized that when I’m watering the plants, I rarely look at my phone.
My hands are busy.
There’s water everywhere.
And I’d rather not test whether my phone enjoys gardening as much as I do. 😂📱💦
Those ten or fifteen minutes become a tiny screen-free break without me intentionally trying to make them one.
I hear birds.
I notice the weather.
I look at the sky.
I check which plants are doing well.
Nothing particularly exciting happens.
And that’s exactly why I like it.
Then Coffee Finally Happened ☕
Once everyone had received enough water and I had successfully resisted the temptation to rearrange the entire balcony, I finally went inside for coffee.
The sun was already higher by then, and the balcony looked extra bright after being watered.
I stood at the door for a second and admired my work.
Very professional gardener behavior.
Please ignore the small puddle I accidentally created near my feet. 😂
Tomorrow I’ll probably come outside and do almost the same thing again.
Water.
Check the leaves.
Move something unnecessarily.
Get excited about a flower.
Then go make coffee.
It’s not an impressive morning routine.
But maybe that’s why I love it.
Some routines don’t need to make us more productive or successful.
Sometimes they can simply make home feel a little happier. 🌿🤍
