This morning I had one job.
Make toast.
Not bake bread.
Not prepare a five-course breakfast.
Not recreate a complicated recipe requiring seventeen ingredients and emotional resilience.
Toast.
Bread goes in.
Toast comes out.
Human civilization has been successfully managing this concept for quite some time.
So naturally…
I burned it. 😂🔥
Everything Was Going Beautifully for About Two Minutes
I woke up feeling cozy and hungry.
The kitchen was filled with soft morning light, I was wrapped in my comfy pink cardigan, and breakfast seemed like the easiest mission imaginable.
I put the bread into the toaster.
Pressed the lever.
And waited.
Well…
I waited for approximately twelve seconds.
Then my attention went somewhere else. 😌
This was Mistake Number One.
I Was Definitely Nearby
Before anyone asks:
Yes, I was still in the kitchen.
Technically.
Physically.
Spiritually?
Apparently I had traveled elsewhere. 😂
I started doing one tiny thing.
Then another.
I looked at my phone.
Put something away.
Noticed something on the counter.
Thought about what I needed to do later.
Basically, my brain opened six tabs while the toaster quietly worked on its secret project.
Then…
I smelled something.
Hmm.
That’s…
toasty.
Very toasty.
Suspiciously toasty.
POP! 🍞
The toast jumped up.
I looked at it.
The toast looked at me.
There was a moment of silence between us.
I believe we both understood that mistakes had been made. 😂
One side had crossed the delicate border between:
“crispy”
and
“archaeological artifact.”
I picked it up carefully.
A tiny bit crumbled away.
There may have been smoke.
Not dramatic movie smoke.
Just enough smoke to make the situation feel personally insulting.
Me:
“How did you become THAT burned?”
Toast:
🔥
Excellent communication.
Of Course I Tried to Save It
I’m not giving up on breakfast that easily.
My first thought was:
Maybe it’s only the surface.
Scrape a little.
Problem solved.
So I attempted toast restoration.
Scrape.
Scrape.
More crumbs.
The kitchen counter slowly began looking like a tiny construction site.
At one point I was essentially performing cosmetic surgery on bread. 😂
“We can rebuild you.”
Unfortunately, the patient had suffered extensive caramelization.
The Smoke Had Opinions
I lifted the toast again and watched one tiny curl of smoke float upward.
That’s when I made the face.
You know the one.
Eyes wide.
Hands up.
The universal expression for:
“I would like everyone to understand that this situation developed without my consent.” 😂
I was standing directly beside the toaster.
There were no other suspects.
Still…
I think we should investigate the appliance.
Fairness is important.
Why Do Toasters Have Such Dramatic Settings?
Can somebody explain toaster numbers?
Because I feel like the difference between settings sometimes goes:
1: warm bread
2: slightly warm bread
3: nice toast
4: crispy
5: goodbye bread
6: message from the underworld 🔥😂
There’s never enough emotional preparation for the jump.
I clearly need a setting labeled:
“Miu is distracted, please protect breakfast from her.”
I would use that one.
Every morning.
Attempt Number Two
I considered eating something else.
But no.
This had become personal.
I took another slice of bread.
Put it into the toaster.
Lower setting.
Pressed the lever.
And this time…
I stood there.
Watching.
Closely.
Extremely closely.
Possibly too closely.
The toaster had lost my trust. 😑😂
I wasn’t leaving.
Not checking messages.
Not wandering around.
Not blinking unnecessarily.
This was now a supervised operation.
Waiting for Toast Is Weirdly Long When You’re Actually Watching It
Have you ever stood directly in front of a toaster waiting?
Time changes.
Ten seconds feels reasonable.
Twenty seconds…
“Are you doing anything?”
Thirty seconds…
“Hello?”
Then you start becoming tempted to push the lever up early.
But no.
I had already interfered enough with breakfast.
So I waited.
And waited.
The toaster and I maintained a tense professional relationship.
POP! Round Two
Beautiful.
Golden.
Warm.
Normal.
TOAST.
I cannot adequately describe the pride I felt about successfully operating a household appliance. 😂🏆
I picked it up.
Perfect.
Well…
close enough.
At this point my standards had become extremely flexible.
After surviving Round One, anything that wasn’t producing smoke qualified for five stars.
Then I Made Breakfast Slightly Too Fancy
Since Toast Number Two had survived, I decided it deserved proper treatment.
A little spread.
Something sweet.
Maybe fruit nearby.
Suddenly I was plating breakfast as if no culinary disaster had occurred approximately four minutes earlier.
That’s one of my favorite things about kitchens.
Recovery can happen quickly.
One burned piece of toast isn’t the end of breakfast.
It’s simply…
the appetizer to the story. 😆
I Think Small Mistakes Are Secretly Entertaining
Not every mistake, obviously.
Some mistakes are expensive.
Some are painful.
Some involve paperwork.
Those are less charming. 😂
But tiny everyday mistakes?
I think they make life funnier.
The coffee you forget until it’s cold.
The shirt you accidentally wear inside out.
Walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there.
Looking everywhere for your phone while holding your phone.
Burning toast despite standing approximately one meter from the toaster.
These moments are so human.
Nobody has an entirely polished day.
And thank goodness.
A perfectly efficient morning would give me significantly fewer stories.
Breakfast Doesn’t Care About Your Reputation
You can be competent at your work.
Organized.
Responsible.
Professional.
Capable of solving complicated problems.
Then breakfast arrives and says:
“Let’s see you handle bread.”
Humbling. 😂
I actually love this about everyday life.
No matter how grown-up we become, there are still moments when we’re standing in the kitchen staring at something ridiculous we’ve just done.
Sometimes all you can do is laugh.
Then make another slice.
I Refuse to Let One Burned Toast Become a Bad Morning
This is probably the only tiny philosophy I’m taking from today’s breakfast adventure.
Sometimes a small annoying thing happens early and we immediately decide:
“Great. It’s going to be one of those days.”
But why give one piece of toast that much authority?
It doesn’t deserve executive control over the next sixteen hours. 😂
The toast burned.
That’s all.
The morning didn’t burn.
The day didn’t burn.
My entire week certainly didn’t burn.
Breakfast simply required Version 2.0.
That’s manageable.
The Second Toast Tasted Better Anyway 😌
Maybe because I was hungry.
Maybe because I had fought for it.
Maybe because surviving a tiny breakfast disaster adds approximately 14% more flavor.
Whatever the reason, Toast Number Two was excellent.
I sat down.
Took a bite.
Looked toward the first unfortunate slice.
And felt absolutely no guilt.
It had fulfilled another purpose.
It gave me something to laugh about.
That’s almost a respectable career for a piece of bread. 🍞😂
Tomorrow, I Have a New Strategy
Tomorrow morning I will:
put bread in toaster,
stay near toaster,
avoid opening seventeen mental tabs,
monitor toast,
eat breakfast.
A flawless plan.
What could possibly go wrong?
Actually…
please don’t answer that. 😭😂
Maybe tomorrow I’ll attempt eggs and create an entirely new chapter.
The Burned-Toast Club Is Now Open 🍞🔥
So if you’ve ever burned breakfast, forgotten something on the stove, made coffee without putting the cup underneath, or created a meal that looked absolutely nothing like the photograph…
welcome.
You’re among friends.
Cooking doesn’t always need to look beautiful.
Mornings don’t always need to run smoothly.
And tiny mistakes don’t always need fixing emotionally.
Sometimes you just need to look at the smoking toast…
raise your hands…
laugh at yourself…
and put another slice in. 😌🍞💗
Just maybe turn the setting down first.
“A little mistake doesn’t have to ruin the moment. Sometimes it just gives an ordinary morning a much better story.” — Miu
