Tonight, I Let Him Decide Where We Were Going 🐕🌅

Usually, I’m the one in charge of our walks.

I choose the route, decide when we turn around, and occasionally attempt to negotiate how long we’re allowed to investigate one extremely interesting patch of grass.

Tonight, I tried something different.

At the first corner, instead of automatically turning toward our usual route, I stopped.

He looked at me.

I looked at him.

Then I loosened the leash slightly and said, “Okay, you choose.”

His tail immediately started wagging.

I may have made a terrible managerial decision. 😂

Apparently, My Dog Has Places to Be

He confidently turned down a street we don’t normally take.

No hesitation whatsoever.

I followed.

For the next few minutes, he behaved like a tiny neighborhood tour guide who had been waiting his entire life for this promotion.

First stop: a tree.

A very important tree, apparently.

He sniffed around it with the concentration of someone reading the morning newspaper.

Then we continued.

Second stop: someone’s gate.

Third stop: another tree.

I was beginning to notice a theme. 😆

He Notices a Completely Different Neighborhood

The funny thing was that although I’ve walked around this area many times, following him made it feel slightly different.

I normally notice houses, gardens, cars, interesting architecture, or whatever is happening further down the street.

He notices everything approximately six inches above the ground.

Leaves.

Smells.

Tiny sounds from behind fences.

Evidence that another dog passed through sometime in recent history.

A mysterious object near a hedge that required a full investigation.

His version of the neighborhood is apparently much more information-rich than mine. 😂

We Accidentally Found the Best Sunset

Because we weren’t following our usual route, we ended up on a quieter street just as the sun dropped toward the hills.

The whole road turned warm and golden.

Long shadows stretched across the pavement, the houses became softly lit, and even his fluffy tail looked like it had its own little halo.

I stopped for a second.

He didn’t.

He had discovered something fascinating near the curb. 🐕😂

Priorities.

Still, I was glad he’d brought us this way.

If I’d chosen the route, we probably wouldn’t have seen this particular sunset.

My Walking Outfit Passed the Comfort Test

I hadn’t dressed for anything special.

Just an oversized cream knit sweater, black leggings, white sneakers, and a small shoulder bag.

Basically my favorite formula for an easy neighborhood walk.

No complicated styling.

No uncomfortable shoes.

And thankfully, sneakers suitable for keeping up with an enthusiastic Golden Retriever who had suddenly become responsible for navigation.

I think he appreciated my practical footwear more than my fashion choices. 😆

There Was One Problem With Giving Him Control

Eventually, I realized something.

He had absolutely no intention of taking us home.

Every intersection was apparently an opportunity to extend the adventure.

Left?

Interesting.

Right?

Also interesting.

Straight ahead?

Possibly the greatest option anyone had ever suggested.

When I finally decided we’d gone far enough and gently turned us toward home, I received the look.

Dog owners know the one.

The expression that says:

I thought you said I was in charge.

Sorry, sir.

Your temporary promotion has been revoked. 😂

The Walk Took Twice as Long

Our normal evening walk isn’t particularly exciting.

It’s part exercise, part routine, and part opportunity for him to collect whatever neighborhood information dogs apparently exchange through bushes.

Tonight took almost twice as long.

But strangely, it didn’t feel like wasted time.

I wasn’t trying to reach anywhere.

I wasn’t counting how many minutes we’d been outside.

I was simply following this ridiculously happy dog while he explored his tiny universe.

And maybe that’s why I came home smiling.

Tomorrow, I’m Taking Back Navigation… Probably

When we finally reached home, he looked completely satisfied with himself.

Water.

Dinner.

Then straight to his favorite resting spot.

Meanwhile, I realized my supposedly ordinary dog walk had become the most entertaining part of my day.

Will I let him choose the route again?

Probably.

But next time I’m establishing some rules.

Rule number one: we eventually have to go home.

Rule number two: fifteen minutes at the same tree is excessive.

Rule number three…

Actually, who am I kidding?

He’s going to ignore the rules anyway. 🐕😂🤍
