Today had been one of those days where nothing was particularly wrong, but my brain seemed to have seventeen tabs open at the same time.
Work.
Messages.
Little things I needed to remember.
Other little things I’d already forgotten. 😂
By late afternoon, I decided I needed a change of scenery.
Nothing dramatic. I wasn’t escaping to a tropical island or disappearing into the mountains.
I just went upstairs.
Well… quite a few floors upstairs. 😆
A rooftop, a comfortable seat, something cold to drink, and a city slowly lighting up below me sounded exactly right.
I Arrived at the Perfect Time
When I sat down, there was still a little daylight left.
The sky had that beautiful mix of orange, pink, and blue that only lasts for a short while before evening takes over.
Buildings in the distance were beginning to switch on their lights one by one.
I love this particular moment in a city.
Daytime hasn’t completely left yet, but nighttime is already arriving.
For a few minutes, you get both.
The sunset on one side.
The city lights on the other.
And me sitting somewhere in the middle, trying very hard not to immediately take fifty photos. 😂📸
I failed, obviously.
Tonight’s Outfit Was All About Easy Neutrals 🤎
I didn’t want to dress too formally tonight, so I kept everything soft and simple.
A cozy beige off-shoulder knit top, relaxed brown trousers, a small black bag, and minimal jewelry.
That’s it.
I really like neutral outfits for evenings like this because they feel effortless without looking too casual.
And when the background is already full of sunset colors, sparkling lights, plants, candles, and an entire skyline, I don’t think my outfit needs to compete for attention.
Sometimes simple wins.
One Drink, No Rush 🍹
I ordered a refreshing drink and told myself I wasn’t going to look at my phone for a little while.
That lasted longer than expected.
Instead, I sat there watching boats move across the water and tiny lights appear in windows across the city.
From high above, everything looked strangely peaceful.
It’s funny because somewhere down there, traffic was probably happening.
People were rushing home.
Someone was definitely wondering what to eat for dinner.
Someone else was probably searching their bag for something they were holding five seconds ago.
You know, normal human life. 😂
But from the rooftop, all of that became tiny lights in the distance.
Dinner Tastes Better When the View Is This Good
Eventually, I ordered something to eat.
I wasn’t even particularly hungry when I arrived, but apparently sunsets have a mysterious ability to activate my appetite. 😆
I took my time.
No rushing through dinner.
No eating while scrolling.
No mentally planning tomorrow between bites.
Just food, conversation around me, soft music, and the skyline getting brighter as the sky became darker.
I realized how rarely I actually give an evening permission to move slowly.
Usually, even relaxation somehow gets scheduled.
Finish work. Eat dinner. Watch something. Go to bed.
Tonight didn’t need an itinerary.
The City Changed After Dark 🌃
By the time the sun had completely disappeared, the view looked entirely different.
The warm orange horizon was gone and thousands of little lights had replaced it.
Restaurants and buildings glowed around the river, candles flickered on nearby tables, and the rooftop suddenly felt much more intimate than it had an hour earlier.
I stayed longer than planned.
Again.
Apparently I’m developing a habit of being terrible at leaving beautiful places. 😂
But I wasn’t ready to go home yet.
So I ordered one more little snack, leaned back in my chair, and enjoyed the view.
Sometimes that’s enough entertainment.
Tomorrow Can Wait Until Tomorrow
Eventually, I picked up my bag and headed home.
My unfinished tasks were still waiting.
My messages hadn’t magically answered themselves.
Tomorrow’s schedule was still tomorrow’s schedule.
But none of it felt quite as urgent anymore.
Maybe we don’t always need to solve everything that’s occupying our minds.
Sometimes we just need to put it down for an evening.
Have dinner.
Watch the sunset disappear.
Notice the city lighting up.
Then return to everything else when our heads feel a little quieter.
Tonight, that worked perfectly for me. 🌙🤍
“Not every evening needs a plan. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stay long enough to watch the whole city change.”
